In a related article, a research project called OpenNotes has set out to find out what would happen if patients were encouraged not just to see their medical records but to take them home, study them and really own them.

OpenNotes published the first results of a new study on doctor and patient attitudes towards shared medical records.

“Knowledge is power,” Ms. Walker said. “A patient goes to the doctor only once in a while, but in between visits, you’re making all kinds of decisions that affect your health every single day.”

There's also an interesting discussion on the tech forum Slashdot on why this may not be a good thing - basically, that medical patients are too novice to understand the information, and some "hypochondriacs will chase until they self-diagnose themselves into oblivion". To me, the argument against that is that medical records transparency will potentially benefit many patients who will, over time, become smarter about the information in their own records.

Thanks for the tip on looking for grass fed labels. It's not necessarily organic but at least it's an indication that the livestock was humanely raised.
